Llwybr Dyffryn Gwy / Wye Valley Walk

A fantastic 136 mile journey from the source of the Wye on Plynlimon Mountain to the old Severn Bridge in Chepstow, the path can be accessed at the top of the lane behind Glangwy Farm. The walk in either direction offers many miles of incredible views of the Upper Wye Valley.

Lon Las Cymru / National Cycle Route 8

From Holyhead to Cardiff through some of the best scenery that Wales has to offer, National Cycle Route 8 passes through Llangurig village just a mile away from Glangwy Farm. Travelling north to Llanidloes and Machynlleth or south to Rhayader and Builth Wells along the River Wye will take you through unforgettable landscapes on quiet low-traffic byways.

Gilfach Nature Reserve

Previously a hill farm now under the guardianship of Radnorshire Wildlife Trust, Gilfach is host to an immense range of flora and fauna, including rare birds, butterflies, heathers and lichens.

Cwmystwyth

This dramatic and desolate river gorge is the site of an abandoned 19th century lead mine. National Cycle Route 818 takes you directly from Glangwy through Tarenig Forest and over a farm track into the valley itself, joining the single track road between Rhayader / Elan and Devil’s Bridge and through some of the most spectacular scenery in the British Isles.

Pen Punlumon Fawr / Plynlimon Mountain

Considered sacred historically as the source of seven rivers, including the Hafren (Severn) and Gwy (Wye), the mountain is the highest in the Elenydd range. The southern base of the mountain at the edge of Tarenig Forest was said to be a campground of King Arthur and his knights. The remains of a lookout shelter for soldiers manning the ancient fire beacon warning system can still be found at the summit, with views across much of Wales and into England.

A stunning landscape of lakes, dams, woodland, mountains, streams and high moors covering a vast area, offering beautiful scenic drives and walking / cycling on dedicated tracks. There is a cafeteria and visitor centre in Elan Village which offers bicycle hire.

In beautiful surroundings, Llyn Clywedog is a favourite for walkers and picnickers. Ospreys have recently been succesfully reintroduced to the lake environment.

Pontarfynach and Devil’s Bridge Waterfalls

The audacity of the construction of the original 12th century monk’s bridge over this deep gorge led the Victorians to proclaim that only the Devil himself could have built it. Fairy tales aside, the view from the Hafod Arms over the temperate rainforest of the upper Rheidol are simply breathtaking, especially in autumn. The hotel here was used as a location in the hit BBC series, Hinterland.

This popular attraction features several MTB tracks, regular Red Kite feeding and next door, the Llywernog silver mine.

Vale Of Rheidol Steam Railway

The Rheidol railway between Pontarfynach and Aberystwyth is a must for steam buffs, running between March and November. The journey takes you through some of the last remaining temperate rainforest in the British Isles, which has survived unspoiled since the last ice age.

Abbeycwmhir

Built in 1143 by Cistercian monks, Abbeycwmhir was the largest Abbey in Wales and is the resting place of the last native Prince Of Wales, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. The modern hall built in 1833 is also open to the public.

Dylife and Glaslyn

The view over the Twymyn valley from Dylife has to be seen to be believed. A little further along the mountain road to Machynlleth is the awe-inspiring Glaslyn Nature Reserve on the northern slopes of Plynlimon, as well as Cadair Viewpoint looking out toward Cadair Idris and the Aran Mountains.
